UPDATE 9/10/2007
I have noticed that a good number of you lately have not been ordering the DVR. This is a big mistake. DVR changes everything about watching TV and once you have it you will never go back to watching the old fashioned way. There is nothing complicated about it. You just hit a button on your remote to stop or restart what you are watching any time you have an interuption (Which is often in my house). It also comes in handy when you just could not hear something well and want to just backup and play that segment again. You can stop what you are watching for up to 2 hours or just record any program any time for watching later. Any time you play back a program you can just skip over the commercials.
As an example of how addictive all this can be, (or perhaps how spoiled my kids are), When I ordered my system I did not include the DVR in my daughters room. Now they have gotten used to using it in the other rooms of the house and pretty well refuse to watch TV in their own room. I can not complain to them too much. Once you have used one, the DVR does quickly become a necessity. For the little bit it cost, for most of you it will be a big mistake to not have it. If you have comments please e-mail me at gary@memorycity.com Thanks

PLEASE READ BEFORE ORDERING
Here are some important things you should
consider before making a decision about which Satellite service to
use; DIRECTV or Dish NetworkWhile prices and service
are generally considered comparable, there are some differences
in programming packages, and also in the equipment itself and the way
the equipment is purchases or rented.
DISH NETWORK DISH
NETWORK PACKAGES
Equipment is provided free in the promotional
package but you are actually renting the equipment. This usually
makes the cost per month lower. Also, many people prefer to have
rented equipment because they feel in the event of failure a swap
out will be easier. As newer and more advanced technology comes on
the market, it may make upgrading easier. These are my words and
are not meant to be taken as legalese. For that you need to read
the terms.
DirecTV DirecTV
PACKAGES
With DirecTV, at the end of the 12 months or
what ever period is called for in the contract, you own the
equipment.
What needs to be stressed here is that with
either provider, you are getting a lot of expensive equipment
pretty much for nothing. You can have Digital Video Recorders for
free and HDTV Receivers and it's all included in your package,
depending on how many rooms you requested and whether or not you
want HDTV and DVR and in how many rooms, etc.
DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDERS
DirecTV uses TIVO for their DVR and Dish
Network uses their own brand. I've heard TIVO is better and I've
also read the Dish version is faster. I haven't done a side by
side comparison of both so I won't say one is better than the
other. We'll be adding a forum in the near future to this site so
users can give you their take on such matters. What I will say is
that it's seems there's a universal opinion among DVR users that
this is the only way to watch TV and they could "Never go back" to
the old way.
HDTV RECEIVERS
When you are ordering your system, you'll be
asked if you want HDTV or not. If you don't have a new HDTV
Television, you would probably just say no, since it won't be
useful to you. However, this will determine which satellite
receiver you will get, and if you think you may be buying a new
HDTV anytime in the foreseeable future, you probably should get
the HDTV receiver (BUT NOT THE HDTV SERVICE). This is one of those things you should think
about now while you're ordering the equipment. The HDTV Receivers
cost difference is almost nothing.
Satellite receivers today are set up to be
single or double receivers. For example, if you ordered service
for two rooms, you would probably get a single receiver (which is
actually two receivers) and two remotes so both rooms can watch
independently of the other. For up to 4 rooms you would add one
more receiver.
If I order Satellite service, what about my
Cable Internet?
More than anything else, this was my dilemma.
I absolutely must have a good full time high speed internet for my
business needs. I am using COX Cable for that and I've been happy
with it most of t he time. If you're using DSL, this really isn't
a factor. The only DSL we really have in this part of Florida is
Sprint, and between Sprint DSL and Cox Cable, I'll pick COX every
time. Cox sells their 4mb stand alone internet for $49.95 per
month. They will offer it for only $39.95 per month if you have
cable service. You can order BASIC cable service from Cox for
about $12.00 per month so really, you may as well have the basic
service which gives you all the local channels (Although not
digital quality as it will be from your satellite dish) since
you're only really paying $2 more per month for it. I figured
that would give me some redundancy and my whole bill was still
less than I was paying Cox before adding the satellite. But now I
had many more channels and options, more HDTV, much better quality
all digital reception and tons of more choices which I could turn
on or off at will. Plus I got about $1000 worth of HDTV and DVR
equipment in the deal. Some people may decide to do it differently
and perhaps go with DSL since you can get some really good deals
on quality DSL service around the country, but where we are, I
just felt it was better to stay with Cox for Internet. The numbers
still work out good and I do like the redundancy.
CREDIT CHECKS
The dish providers do run credit checks. If
you don't want that, you can call the number and Promo Code for
Dish Network, and request the "FREE FOR ALL PROMOTION". It's a
very good deal. With this promotion, you'll probably be required
to put up a $200 deposit but you won't have your credit checked
which can lower your score a point or 2 temporarily.

WHEN YOU HEAR THE CABLE ADS, THINK OF US AND ASK YOURSELF; WHAT ARE THEY SO AFRAID OF?
You've heard the ads. Over and over again, every few
minutes. Satellite TV must be awful right? Not only that,
the ads in our part of the country go so far as to portray a
bunch of crooks wanting to con unsuspecting customers in to
buying all kinds of equipment, and then snickering about it.
So, according to these ads, not only are satellite dishes
apparently from Satin himself, the satellite people and
employees all down the line are so bad and dishonest, that
if true, they should all be rounded up and taken to
prison!
Who runs all these ads? Who else, your friendly cable
company. I guess they can afford it. They own the cable and
they certainly have the money. What's my take on this?
There's really only two conclusions you can come to. Either
the ads are true, and Satellite is a great evil, or
Satellite is a very scary and evil thing to the cable
companies and they are scared to death!
The whole thing is rather humorous. Drive by your local
Cable Company and what do you see? Are those not great big
SATELLITE DISHES in their yard? Hmmmmmmm. Don't they also
worry about it raining and messing up their signal? Couldn't
they just subscribe to some "Big Brother Cable Company" and
have the stuff brought into them in one large humongus cable
and then redistribute it to us? They always talk about how
rain causes problems. Is that what is occurring when we are
watching a program on our local cable and everything goes
out or becomes fuzzy for a few minutes?
But if Satellite is so bad, why would they redistribute
satellite signals themselves? I'm just so confused!
Satellite is bad, so they want me to keep my cable and pay
them a lot more but the cable I buy from them is still
connected to a satellite which they redistribute. Meanwhile
the satellite signal when it comes directly to my house
instead of through them is much clearer and better, but it
cost less. Hmmmmmm.... Maybe I'm not so confused
anymore!
